Six hens, six colors, every one too bold to stay home

Six appliquéd hens strut across the cream quilted panel at the heart of this bag — each one stitched in a different color: a bold red, a soft pink with white dots, a sunny yellow, a deep purple, a warm orange, and a teal-touched green, every bird plump and full of personality. The hens stand on a cheerful yellow band, framed top and bottom by a riot of tiny patchwork squares in red, purple, teal, gold, and every print in between, all hand-quilted with a close crosshatch that gives the surface its satisfying texture. Surrounding panels continue the same confetti patchwork, and the handles are wrapped in matching striped quilted fabric. Claire and Riley found this one the way they find everything for the shop their mother Margaret opened in 1978 — by picking up the pieces they genuinely couldn't put down.
