A broad-shouldered grizzly bear — rendered in warm chestnut and tan, with individual quilt stitching that gives his fur real depth and dimension — ambles across the front of this cylindrical duffle as if he owns the valley. He's surrounded by a full wilderness scene: two glowing log cabins with lit windows, a cascading waterfall tumbling over mossy grey boulders, and a forest of layered evergreens fading into a blazing amber and orange sky. The scene wraps the entire barrel of the bag in pieced and appliquéd fabric, each element its own carefully chosen cloth. Claire and Riley found this piece for the shop their mother Margaret opened right here in Cape May back in 1978 — and it's exactly the kind of thing Margaret would have stopped mid-aisle to pick up herself.

• Patchwork Handles Worth Noticing — The top carry handles are themselves pieced from the same multi-color autumn fabrics, so nothing about this bag is an afterthought.
• The Last of This Run — We took what the workshop had left. Once these are gone we will not be getting them again.
• Looking After Her — Spot clean with a soft damp cloth and let her air dry. No tumble dryer — it flattens the quilting.
